Electricity poles will appear in the shape of birds and animals

Austria has launched an extraordinary initiative that combines creativity, sustainability, and technology by transforming traditional electricity poles into monumental works of art. Under the new project called “The Austrian Power Giants,” the country is redesigning power pylons into giant sculptures inspired by animals and birds.

The unique project aims to harmonize energy infrastructure with natural landscapes while promoting environmental awareness and tourism. The first two prototype pylons feature designs of a stork and a stag (deer).

The stork sculpture symbolizes the migratory birds that visit Burgenland every year, while the stag design represents the lush green forests of Lower Austria. These impressive structures have been developed jointly by Austrian Power Grid (APG) and Meissl Architects, combining advanced engineering with artistic creativity.

Both pylons are currently in the testing phase to ensure structural safety, wind resistance, and electrical reliability.

Interestingly, scale models of these artistic power pylons are on display at Singapore’s Red Dot Design Museum until October 2026, where they have already won the Red Dot Design Award 2025 in the Electrification and Decarbonization category.

According to APG officials, this innovative approach will not only enhance public acceptance of new energy infrastructure but also boost local tourism and regional economies.

Future phases of the project will introduce unique animal-inspired designs representing each of Austria’s nine states — Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower and Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg, and Vienna — each reflecting local wildlife and culture.

Austria’s “Power Giants” stand as a symbol of harmony between technology and nature, offering a glimpse into a future where sustainability meets creativity in every line of the power grid.
